Best Bars & Pubs In Cologne

The Grid Bar

Finding the bar was a little mystery in itself. The entrance is discreet and unassuming, hidden behind some bamboo plants. Instead of stepping in like a normal bar, you'd have to ring a bell, like visiting a friend's home, quite unsure if you've found the right place.

But once inside, The Grid reveals its true character. The gold interiors light up the eyes, and a gleaming display of whiskeys, gins, and other spirits greet you. But don't expect any classic co*cktails here. The bar prides itself on creating creative co*cktails with uncommon ingredients.

One of the drinks we absolutely love is the Bloody Maria which includes Patron 100% Agave tequila, along with Parmesan and vine-ripened tomatoes. The menu also features our favorite, the Sichuan Panda, a beverage made with baijiu, yuzu, carrot, and pandan (a fragrant leaf popular in South Asian cuisine) served in a striking red drink can.

Catering to cigar lovers, the bar's menu includes Davidoff Cigars. There's a sophisticated smoking lounge at the back, as well as a heated outdoor terrace.

Address:Friesenstraße 62, 50670 Köln, Germany

Seiberts

We had high expectations when we set out to visit Seibert's. It's inevitable to come across its name as one of Germany's best, and it didn't disappoint. This sultry bar exudes old-school elegance, and is the kind of place with drinks crafted at an extremely high-level of standard.

Seibert's policy is first-come, first-served, and it being a very small bar creates a sense of exclusivity. Some might gripe about having to queue up outside, but it allows every guest to feel equal. We arrived early and were rewarded with a seat at the bar, where we could witness the artistry of the bartenders.

Although we had limited time, the desire to work our way through the entire menu was undeniable. Our bartended poured heart and soul into every drink, focusing on the smallest details from homemade syrups and barrel aged co*cktails. I found the New Ginger Mai Tai exquisite and the Old Fashioned to be the best I've had.

While prices are understandably on the higher side, you'll find the experience at Seiberts totally worthwhile.

Little Link

Little Link doesn't fit neatly into any bar stereotype. It caters to a diverse crowd, from stylish hipsters to your everyday folks. The bar is also a master of disguise, presenting itself as a simple, neighborhood joint. You won't realize it makes outstanding co*cktails... or has been repeatedly voted as one of the city's best. The stylish co*cktail bar and restaurant for travelers offers unique drinks that satisfies both classic tastes and adventurous palates. My personal favorite was the Disco Bird, a fizzy delight served in a disco ball. The Ruby Sour, with gin and rhubarb, was tasty and unusual.

What surprised us even more was the food. The sandwiches – roast beef, pulled pork, or grilled cheese – were extraordinarily tasty and reason enough to return.

The place can get quite crowded, and you might have to wait for a table as it's highly regarded around here. But the experience is well worth it – especially for relaxing after a day spent exploring the many shops, galleries, and cafes strewn throughout this trendy neighborhood.

Monkey Bar

At times, one craves for an evening sipping on co*cktails while soaking in a delicious city skyline. This hidden gem perched atop 25Hours Hotel The Circle features lovely rooftop views (from the 8th floor) from terrace seats. The inside of the Monkey Bar is quirky, thanks to an eclectic combination of 1970s retro interior and plenty of foliage.

The co*cktails feature a fruity tropical twist, with flavors like pineapple, pomegranate, lemongrass and Hibiscus. For the adults, there are low alcohol options, such as Like A Piña Colada with a ginger beer base. They serve replicas from around the world too, such as the p*rnstar Martini made famous by Townhouse Bar in London.

Hungry patrons can easily order food from the adjacent NENI restaurant. Its menu is inspired by Eastern Mediterranean cuisine, such as hummus, falafel, and even sweet potato fries.

Address: Im Klapperhof 22-24, 50670 Köln, Germany

Suderman Bar

The Suderman bar is a bit tucked away, located in the trendy Hansaring area of Cologne, but the short expedition here will prove to be special. The laid-back atmosphere and crowd creates a nice vibe for a relaxing evening, complete with a foosball table, darts, and a live DJ spinning vinyl records.

I hear a terrific taco truck comes by a few times a week to dole out meaty, drool-worthy tacos bursting with flavor too.

The bartenders here are like master artists, crafting some of the most yummy co*cktails around. One of my favorites is theMandarin Smash, although you can describe your preferences to the staff and let them make suggestions – these rarely go wrong.Despite some of the unconventional ingredients there, I recommend giving the drinks a try for yourself.

Aside from the fantastic drinks, the dim lighting, chill music and sleek interiors give you the feeling of being in a cool New York City bar. [4]

Address: Sudermanpl. 3, 50670 Köln, Germany

Koelner Kickerfabrik

We stumbled upon Kickerfabrik quite by chance, and it turned out to be a fantastic find. It's not your typical bar – it's more like a place for foosball or table soccer. For just a couple euros to play, we ended up spending the whole evening there!

The chilled beers were reasonably priced, and the overall vibe was just wonderful. It's the kind of place where you can kick back and have a blast after a long day of sightseeing.

The location is well-connected in the south of Cologne, which made it easy for us to hop to other nearby pubs with plenty of alternatives. Next door there's even Spybrain, an escape room for those seeking more adventure.

Address:Kartäuserwall 55, 50678 Köln, Germany

Ona Mor

In essence, Ona Mor is not just a bar; it's an experience. It's one of the classiest and most beloved bars in Cologne, and I can understand why. The bar exudes a blend of old-world charm and contemporary elegance, with a wood and brick interior lit by candlelight.

The moment you arrive, you're welcomed with warmth and sophistication. Someone personally escorts you to your table, and while you peruse the menu, you're served water and a bowl of homemade truffle popcorn. The attention to detail is impeccable.

Now, let's talk about the co*cktails. The menu here is a work of art, seven times voted among the top five menus in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. You can order from the menu or let the skilled bartenders craft a bespoke drink for you.

My first drink was the zestyRéglisse Concombre, a Dutch gin-based co*cktail combining freshly crushed cucumber, orange liqueur, lemon, and homemade juniper syrup. I also sampled Tommy's Margarita, a creative variation with wild berries and sweet mustard, delivering a complex profile of earthy, tangy, fruity, and subtly spicy elements.

Around Ona Mor, there's no shortage of bars. Thanks to its convenient location, you can easily move to nearby pubs, providing you with a variety of alternatives to continue your evening.

The Corkonian Irish Pub

It all began with a recommendation from an Irish friend. They told me about this Irish pub in the heart of Cologne's old town, owned by fellow Irish folks. What I found was a warm and welcoming atmosphere with a friendly bartender. Ideally situated at the Alter Markt, we initially dropped in for a drink but ended up spending hours there.

While the place might need a bit of a spruce up and a fresh coat of paint, it has classic, pub-like charm. They had live football on TV and the crowd there was warm and friendly, seemingly Corkonian regulars. There's plenty of seating inside and outside, allowing you to soak in the lively atmosphere of the Alter Markt.

My Guinness was exceptional, served perfectly cold and with that creamy goodness it's known for. I heard the Guinness here is second only to what you'd find in Ireland, and they do have Kolsch, so you can still enjoy the local flavor.

Whether you're looking for a quick bite or simply want to grab a drink with friends, The Corkonian has everything you need.

Address:Alter Markt 51, 50667 Köln, Germany

Kölschbar

Kölschbar, a quintessentially Cologne pub, holds a special place for lovers of Kölsch, football, and revelry. This is not just a sports bar; it's a local institution.

The bar's atmosphere is laidback and casual, and is where Cologne's heart and soul come to life - whether you're seeking a laid-back evening to appreciate fresh Kölsch, a welcoming pub to catch a football match with friends, or a Carnival bench.

Indeed, watching the Bundesliga and the Champions League on the big screen while sipping on a finely bitter Gaffel Kölsch is an experience not to be missed.

You'll find people of all ages enjoying themselves here, so don't be surprised if you strike up a conversation with someone who has lived in Cologne their whole life!

Best Nightclubs In Cologne

Bootshaus

I had the chance to explore Bootshaus, a techno powerhouse that has been creating quite a buzz and for good reason. It recently claimed the top spot as the best nightclub in Germany, even securing the eighth position globally, according to DJ Mag. [5]

12 Best Bars And Clubs In Cologne, Germany [July 2024] (7)

It was once a storage facility for boats on the eastern bank of the Rhine before being transformed into a prominent club. There's no strict dress code; according to them "everything goes, nothing is a must" This laid-back approach can result in an eclectic crowd.

Once you step inside, the sheer size of Bootshaus will amaze you. It boasts a vast main floor and two slightly smaller rooms – the BLCKBX and the Dreherei. The club's exceptional sound quality is a major draw for fans.

Once inside, the atmosphere is electric, with dazzling lighting effects, including ceiling pyrotechnics. With a capacity of 2,000, the venue is well-ventilated, so it doesn't get too hot even when packed.

One key to Bootshaus's enduring popularity is its resident DJs, all hailing from the local Cologne scene. They include the likes of Björn Grimm, Brandon, Dave Replay, Elle Rich, Emin, Kevin Arnold, Marco Franica, and Oliver Magenta. They're the ones who keep the dance floor pulsating with energy and keep the crowd coming back for more.

So Bootshaus is not just a nightclub; it's a sonic journey, a visual spectacle, and a testament to the power of music. It's no wonder that it's making waves on the international nightlife scene.

Sonic Ballroom

The Sonic Ballroom in Ehrenfeld is a rare gem in the world of authentic punk rock clubs. The club welcomes young hardcore, rock 'n' roll, and punk bands, creating a counter-culture atmosphere that's hard to find elsewhere.

Bands performing here are fresh, surprising, and diverse, which defies the clichés of the 1980s punk scene. At Sonic Ballroom, it's the shared love of music, not fashion, that unites everyone.

Located in Ehrenfeld, once you reach Sonic Ballroom you'll be greeted by an oversized silhouette of the Ramones on the wall, and a canvas of countless stickers, creating a unique, chaotic, and colorful aesthetic that pays homage to the punk rock culture. The staff's gruff friendliness adds to the charm.

For those seeking an unpretentious and enjoyable dive bar experience, where you can lose yourself in loud music and rock 'n' roll, Sonic Ballroom is the place to be.

Address: Oskar-Jäger-Straße 190, 50825 Köln, Germany

Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld

Another exciting night in Ehrenfeld, and this time, we've set our sights on Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld, known affectionately as CBE. It's a pearl in this district, nestled right next to Ehrenfeld train station, and it's where eclectic entertainment thrives.

CBE isn't just about one type of entertainment; it's a versatile venue. They host concerts, parties, flea markets, poetry slams, exhibitions, and record fairs. You might catch a smaller concert one night while the next night, newcomers are given a chance to shine.[6] The large summerbeer garden adds to its charm and is perfect for enjoying drinks during warm evenings.

And then, there are the larger parties that turn the energy up a notch. One particular highlight is the famous Latin party Radio Sabor a lively affair that always draws a lively crowd.

Women can opt for a dress or blouse paired with heels or nice flats. However, different venues may have varying dress codes depending on the atmosphere and music genre they offer.

For instance, some clubs may require co*cktail dresses or suits for entry, while others are more relaxed and allow jeans and t-shirts.

Arrive Early To Avoid Long Lines

If you're planning a night out in Cologne, arriving early could be the key to avoiding long lines and maximizing your time at some of the city's most popular bars and clubs.
