Where to Find the Fields of Hatred in Diablo 4

There are two Fields of Hatred in Sanctuary, which can be noted by their distinctive light red hue on the map. Note, this should not be confused with the red areas on the map that will appear at World Tier III: Nightmare, which indicate the Helltide Events.

The first of these Fields of Hatred can be found in the west of Sanctuary, in the Dry Steppes region. The nearest Waypoint for this can be found in Alzuuda. The second Field of Hatred is in Kehjistan, in the southwest, with the nearest Waypoint being Denshar.

If you're ready to explore the Fields of Hatred, we'd recommend starting with the one in Alzuuda. The reason for this is as soon as you enter one of the two Fields of Hatred, a Priority Quest will begin, where you'll need to speak to Erol in Alzuuda. By doing this, Erol will give you more information on how this PvP mechanic works.

Fields of Hatred Explained

Being in the Fields of Hatred gives you a unique opportunity to earn Seeds of Hatred. These can then be transformed into Red Dust, which is used to purchase items from the Vendors in Alzuuda and Denshar.

You can earn Seeds of Hatred in a number of ways, such as:

  • Slaying monsters in the areas
  • Completing events where not only monsters will drop Seeds of Hatred, but there'll be chests full of them if you're successful
  • Opening Baleful Chests (you need to be Bloodmarked to do this)
  • Taking down the Fields of Hatred roaming boss

What is the Mark for Blood and How to Be Bloodmarked

In order to attack other players, you'll need to be Bloodmarked. To do this, open the Actions Wheel and scroll to the left. When you're not in the Fields of Hatred, this will say PvP Unavailable, but as soon as you enter these blood-soaked fields, the option will appear to Mark for Blood.

As you select this option, you'll become Bloodmarked, and a red ring will appear around your character. You will now be open to attacks, and free to attack other players. If you choose to enter the Fields of Hatred without being Bloodmarked, you can just complete events and kill the monsters around the area safely.

When you need to stop being Bloodmarked, you can cancel it by visiting an Altar of Cleansing. You'll find one of these altars in both Alzuuda and Denshar.

How to Get Red Dust

Once you've battled your fellow players, completed optional events, taken down some monsters roaming the land, opened chests, or slayed the roaming Seething Abomination, you'll earn yourself some Seeds of Hatred.

You can keep track of how many Seeds of Hatred you have in the top right corner of your screen, next to your mini-map.

When you're done with the Fields of Hatred and ready to convert your Seeds of Hatred into Red Dust, you'll have to visit an Altar of Extraction. Both the Dry Steppes and Kehjistan have four Altars of Extraction dotted around the regions.

You can see the locations of each Altar of Extraction marked on the maps below:

  • Dry Steppes Fields of Hatred Altars of Extraction and Cleansing Altar
  • Kehjistan Fields of Hatred Altars of Extraction and Cleansing Altar

Kehjistan Fields of Hatred Altars of Extraction and Cleansing Altar

At each of these Altars of Extraction, you'll need to perform a ritual where waves of enemies will appear for 50 seconds, while the Red Dust is extracted from the Seeds of Hatred.

The amount of Red Dust you receive will be the same as the amount of Seeds of Hatred you put into the altar. When the Ritual is complete, the Altar of Extraction will be on cooldown and you won't be able to use it for roughly another 50 seconds. If you die after the Seeds of Hatred have been turned into Red Dust, you won't lose any of it.

Note: Anyone can pick up Seeds of Hatred that are dropped. If you die in the Fields of Hatred, you will drop them all. Seeds of Hatred that have not been turned into Red Dust will be lost if you leave the Fields of Hatred before doing so.

Where to Spend Red Dust

Red Dust can be spent at the special vendors in Alzuuda and Denshar and will have a small Seed of Hatred icon underneath them. The shops available in both of these zones include:

  • Odds and Ends Vendor
  • Cursed Scroll Vendor
  • Unsavory Oddities Vendor
  • Unconventional Mount Armor

Odds and Ends Vendor

Here you can trade Red Dust for Cosmetics and unlock new looks for your player. These will become available at the Wardrobe when unlocked and start from around 60,000 Red Dust.

Cursed Scroll Vendor

At this store, you can trade Red Dust for Cursed Scrolls that will simultaneously give you a buff and a debuff. They can only be used in the Fields of Hatred and will range from randomly teleporting you to a place in the region to decreasing the damage you take from other players while increasing the damage you take from monsters.

Unsavory Oddities Vendor

Swap Red Dust for a Cap, Tunic, Gloves, Boots or Pants at random. Each gamble will set you back around 3,000 Red Dust.

Unconventional Mount Armor

Want to make your Mount stand out? Swap Red Dust for some Unconventional Mount Armor. The items in this shop range from Cosmetic Trophies to Cosmetic Horse Armor, but you'll also be able to take the Reins of a Bloody Steed for 100,000 Red Dust.

Fields of Hatred Boss Guide

In this PvP field, you'll also find a Fields of Hatred boss that stalks the land called the Seething Abomination. Killing this boss will reward you with bigger Seeds of Hatred drops, as well as Items and Equipment.

How to Beat the Seething Abomination

The attack pattern of the Seething Abomination is quite repetitive, so the main thing you'll need to watch out for is the abundance of poison pools it creates it as punches down into the ground. Anything that gives you Poison Resistance, including Elixirs is your best bet for making it through this fight.

You'll generally want to stay behind it as it attacks, this way you can avoid it swipes. When it's getting ready to punch down, it will raise its claw. Use your Dodge here, to dash behind it and attack it while it creates a pool of poison in front of it. It will swiftly turn around to face you again, attempting to swipe at you immediately.

Keep moving as you fight the Seething Abomination to stop too many pools of poison from forming a circle around you and leaving you little room to move. You'll want to have a clear space behind the Seething Abomination to duck around it and attack, so movement during this fight is key.

Aside from its swiping attacks and the poison pools, the only other real attack it has is a punch attack followed by a charge. This one has slightly more of a build-up than the regular punching attacks, but will still create a pool of poison. Immediately after laying this down, the Seething Abomination will dash towards you. Use Dodge again here, to quickly jump out of the way of the oncoming attack.

Things to remember while you're fighting the Seething Abomination are:

  • This is a multi-stage fight, so it will drop Seeds of Hatred as well as potions along the way.
  • However, potions will have more of a cooldown (around 8 seconds) while in the Fields of Hatred, so be careful when you use them.
  • On the plus side, if you die, you'll spawn back at the town nearest to the PvP zone and the health bar of the Seething Abomination won't be replenished, so you pick up where you left off in the fight

Fields of Hatred and the Tree of Whispers

Once you've completed the main campaign of Diablo 4, you'll unlock the Tree of Whispers as an activity. Whispers will appear around the map for a limited time and can be completed to gain Grim Favors. These Grim Favors are then exchanged at the Tree of Whispers for item collections and occasionally, Legendary Caches.

From time to time, the activities in the Fields of Hatred will appear as Whispers, rewarding you with not only Seeds of Hatred but Grim Favors for completing them. It's worth participating in Fields of Hatred events when they appear as Whispers, to maximize your rewards.
