Hungarians elect EU representatives in an election seen as a referendum on Orbán's popularity

  • By JUSTIN SPIKE - Associated Press

Voters have begun casting their ballots in Hungary early Sunday to choose their representatives for the European Parliament in an election many see as a referendum on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s popularity. This comes amid fears that right-wing populists like Orbán are likely to make significant gains which could undermine the ability of the world’s biggest trading bloc to make decisions. The five-time prime minister had expressed hopes that parties across Europe that oppose providing military support to Ukraine would gain a majority in the EU legislature. Yet many Hungarians are dissatisfied with his leadership and may vote for his main challenger Péter Magyar.

Stranded migrants confront violence and despair as Tunisia partners to keep them from Europe

  • By SAM METZ - Associated Press

Europe's efforts to partner with neighboring countries to curb migration have resulted in thousands of migrants being stranded in Tunisia. Tunisia's authorities with EU funds have successfully prevented tens of thousands of people from crossing the Mediterranean. But thousands more are now encamped in small towns along the coast where they hide in olive groves and wait for a chance to cross the sea. They have no money to return home. Their presence has unleashed a xenophobic backlash in Tunisia, whose many residents are also trying to get to Europe in search of a better life.

In secular France, chaplains prepare to provide Olympians with spiritual support during the Games

  • By GIOVANNA DELL’ORTO - Associated Press

More than 120 faith leaders are preparing for an Olympic challenge — how to spiritually support some 14,000 athletes and their staff who will take part in the Paris Games. Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim religious and lay leaders will share a single hall in the athletes’ village. That in itself will be a message of unity at a time of geopolitical conflicts that might weigh heavily on athletes. In the hall, the chaplains will provide some worship services, prayers in different global traditions and especially support for those facing challenges. They expect to offer comfort to athletes whose medal dreams will inevitably get crushed.

Sacramento mass shooting suspect dies in jail cell, police and attorney say

  • BRIAN P. D. HANNON - Associated Press

California officials say a suspect who was being held on charges connected to a 2022 mass shooting in the state capital has died in his cell. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office says the 29-year-old male inmate died at the Sacramento County Main Jail around 2:15 a.m. Saturday. Public defender Norman Dawson identified the man as Smiley Martin, his client who was awaiting trial on three felony charges stemming from an April 3, 2022, shooting in Sacramento that killed six people and wounded 12 others. The sheriff's office says deputies were conducting a cell check and found an unresponsive inmate. The deputies and then fire department personnel attempted life-saving procedures but he was pronounced dead. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

Thailand's progressive Move Forward party braces for court case that might dissolve it

  • AP

The former leader of Thailand’s progressive opposition Move Forward party has vowed to keep fighting as the party faces a court case that could result in its dissolution. The Constitutional Court has agreed to rule on whether the party violated the constitution by proposing to amend a law that forbids defaming the country’s royal family. The petition requested the party’s dissolution and a 10-year ban on political activity by its executives. The court has not said when it will rule on this case. Pita Limjaroenrat, the former leader of Move Forward, laid out the details of the party’s legal defenses at a news conference on Sunday. “If there is a rule of law in Thailand, I’m extremely confident” the party’s arguments will prevail, he said.
