Figured that we had enough people in this area who beat on their cars in an enthusiastic manner, that we needed a thread for our exploits!!!

Spent the majority of the day yesterday at FedEx field!

First was the AI event, where I ran STS "non-comp". First two runs were on my current tire setup(Dunlops front, kumhos back), and the results were the same as the previous event. After the second run though, Ian Baker let me borrow a set of his RE-11s! After a quick tire change, I went out for my final two runs!!! Immediately, the car felt different. The violent wheel hop at the start was gone, steady state grip was up, and I could get on and off the gas at will!!! It showed in the times as well, with a NOTICEABLE drop! I finished the day with a 64.5xx, which would have been good enough for first in STS if I was competing.

After that, I went over to the Level 2 school to help out and get a few more runs... That was actually pretty helpful, because it allowed me to do some pretty crazy adjustments to the car, and see how it responded... Definitely going to put some of that knowledge to use next weekend!!!

Now where are those 'stones I ordered... hmm...

Spent the day finishing details on the SSM car for the first race of the season in two weeks on 4/24 at Summit Point. It's nice to see the last little items on the checklist on the windshield getting checked off after two months of part time work. That, and the flow of boxes via Fed Ex and UPS has at last slowed to a crawl.

So far I've renewed the brakes (calipers, rotors, pads, fluid); changed the engine, trans, and diff oil; replaced the front hubs and installed new wheel studs on that end; done the annual plug, wires, and air cleaner replacement; installed a new fuel filter; mounted the new tires and remounted the old ones; scaled and aligned the thing; gotten paint and body panels; new numbers; and had it dyno'd and sealed. The there is all the work done getting the van and trailer ready for the upcoming season. It's not referred to as "winter" at my house so much as "the time to spend money on the car without actually driving it season."

All that's left to make it race ready is a thorough nut and bolting which will start tonight. The advantage of running the same car for years is that I have a good expectation of what will tend to loosen and what won't. Sadly, a few projects that I had planned for it over the winter (new fire system, right side window net, modify the filler neck, and repaint the floor and the trunk) have not happened yet, but will over the next few weeks.

I ran STR for the first time yesterday at FedEx. Brought the 99 on RE01Rs that are probably just about kaput. Started out with pressures too high and the car was really tail happy. I looped it in the slalom coming down the hill on my first run, that was fun. After that I kept taking air out of tires and getting faster with my best run being a 68.05ish. That, I think should have me fifth out of nine or ten in STR and I'm happy with that.

After running at Bowie for the first couple times out this year I forgot just how awesome it is that we get to play at FedEx. Last time out at Bowie (CDC) the fast guys were turning times around 34 seconds, that's not enough time to get your mind in the game before it's already over. Yesterday's course was just awesome, flowed well, lots of fast bits and not too many really slow bits.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the Waldorf AI event is going to work. It's pricier but with eight runs over the course of the day there shouldn't be any excuses when we leave. I'd have gladly cracked open the wallet for four more runs on yesterday's course.

Dan, I'm definitely unhooking the rear sway before taking the 99 out again, and I imagine I'll be taking one or both cars for alignments (York?) before too long. And I'm just about to head out the door to pick up my freshly-mounted RE11s. I imagine there should be more than a little improvement in my future, although it'$ co$ting me more than I ever imagined I'd $pend to go autocro$$ing to get there.

Mod the driver not the car. :D You don't need to spend a fortune on the car at this point. Moxnix and I have bone stock engines/drivetrains. You can do fine on old tires, I'm running Dan's old RE01Rs that he got from a guy that got em from Ian Baker. True, I will be mounting some Star Specs soon, but my first 5 years of autox I ran crap tires and learned to drive around them.

But getting the alignment is a very good idea. Check the thread on STS setups in the Performance Driving sub-forum to get a good alignment baseline. Maximize the potential of those tires!

Ride-a-longs help too. You're welcome to ride with me during an event if you want.

the re-11's where a LOT faster.. I think the Miata is just too light to build heat in the Kumhos over 4 runs.... I was able to take a few runs back to back on a course later in the day, and after about the fourth run, with approx. 1 minute breaks in between, the rear got planted, and the car did started to act like it did on the RE-11s...

Who knows what the Kumhos would be like later this summer, but right now they just aren't a good match for my car. Glad I orded the RE-11's though!!!

I hear what you're saying, but this little shopping spree is just trying to reduce the number of excuses I have to fall back on before finally admitting that some people are just plain better than me at this. I know for a fact that I'm out of the 'big' spendy stuff business on my two cars; suspension, tires, etc... they're as good as they're going to be. At some point we'll be doing suspension on Kate's car since the body roll that shows up in pictures of it in action is kinda comical.

As for modding this driver, there will be some SCCA autocross schools in my future.

Yeah, it's the competition. I know where I'll wind up in STS and it's not encouraging. That's not saying that I'd fare any better in STR but at least in STR there aren't any dedicated ground-up race car builds doing battle with my daily driver. I can finish 5th in either class but in STR I might only be a couple seconds behind the leader, while in STS I'll be eleven.

There are some other Cheapskate Roadster club members in STR, all rookies like me, and I'm looking forward to seeing how we all gain skill and speed as the season goes on.

Plus, on the big ol lot at FedEx, that 99 is just too fun. The 90 is a great autocrosser, but sometimes I think going without power steering isn't that hot a setup. Once I tweak the 99 a little more I think it'll be pretty good, for as relatively untweaked a car as it is.

Doubleheader this weekend! Running with the BMW club in Waldorf tomorrow, driving Kate's MSM on the RE11s. Hope they build in lots of stretches where I can B0000ST. Then it's back home, put those tires on the 99 and gear up for FedEx on Sunday afternoon.

That's one of those trade-offs when it comes to registering for an autocross.... Morning session means you get to have the rest of the day to do other stuff... Afternoon means you get to sleep in, and might get a shot at some fun runs afterwards!!!

Were you in the other black miata (white hardtop)? The driver of that one seemed to be doing really well for the tires they were on. Looked to be all-season street tires.

And thanks for the compliments. I did OK, still a few places I need to work on, and I definitely need to work on my heel-toe techniquie. Most of the times I was doing it (T5 and T1) I was lifting off the brake when I hit the gas. I tried to correct it but it was almost an involuntary thing. Thats one of the main things I need to work on next time out. That and I'd like to try to take T4 flat out with harder braking into t5 and try to take t10 a little faster.

I find that I can do it EASILY at lower level braking (IE not pressing the brake pedal as hard), but when I'm HARD on the brakes, which is basically never on the street, I lift a little bit. I was able to correct this a few times by just downshifting RIGHT before I turn in, but I'd still like to be able to do it correctly.

WhiteSSP - I do know the concept of heel-toe, but I don't like doing it on track. Yep, we were in the black/white one. Try heel-toe on a country road, depending on if you are rolling your ankle to the gas or actually twisting your foot so that your heel is on the gas depends on where hard breaking works or not. You can actually move your pedals closer, that may help, may not.

If you missed the Autocrossers Inc event in Waldorf today you missed out on a great day. Four morning runs, lunch in the stadium, then back at it for four afternoon runs. Great 50+ second course (at least for us mere mortals) with a good mix of fast bits and heavy braking using more of that big lot than I've seen used before.

The braintrust at AI are weighing the possibility of doing more days like this, and I hope they do, especially if they keep doing it in Waldorf for purely selfish reasons.

I know lots of folks don't like running on Washington circuit but I really dig it. Big, mini-roadcourse like, fast and fun sweepers at both ends. The slippery pavement bring in an element of skill. Well run event & the fun runs afterward were nice. The scenic drive out to SP is also nice. It's too bad other clubs have dropped it from their schedules. Alan, it is good to hang out.

Claff

15th May 2010, 23:53

Yeah what a great day. Good temperatures, good roads, good event, good ride home.

I'm not a fan of the Washington Circuit but I'll withhold further judgement till I can get on it with better tires than the UHPs on the MSM. If I go to the next one there in June I'll probably try the '99 instead.

WDCR squared away whatever was possibly affecting their having their schools next weekend, so next Saturday and Sunday I'm going to be a student. Can't wait, though it means skipping an AI points event.

I don't know if I've seen him run before but he was absolutely wringing everything out of that car from the first run to the last of the fun runs. I was telling him about it and he said "I love this car, but I drive it like I hate it." I figured he was driving it like he already had his next set of tires waiting for him in the garage and he needed an excuse to burn off what was already on the car. Either way, he was having fun driving and we were having fun watching.

It took me six runs to finally put together a decent run since the MSM needed so much shifting to stay off the rev limiter. Unfortunately, only the first four runs counted in the standings. I wound up 5th out of 11 in class.

Skipping BMW at Summit even though I'm probably 1st or 2nd in X3 class. SP is two hours or so from home and while it's not a bad trip going there (assuming running afternoon heat), the ride home can be brutal.

We're bringing the 90 and 93 to AI on Sunday.

They had that "Zoomin the Mountains of East Tennessee" event last weekend and we went. One event was a low-key autocross at Bristol Motor Speedway and I wound up winning in the '90, Kate got 3rd in her MSM. Probably won't see results remotely close to that good in a very long time running locally.

Started raining heavily and when I hit the new sealant at the top sweeper, mentally I was turning and heading back up the straight, physically I was sliding sideways up the grassy hill...lol. I got my first win today, except I wasn't driving. Aure and I shared my '90 and he wound up winning STS at FedEx today with AI. I was 2nd, about two seconds back. We had his tires (Toyo Proxes) and his camera and looking at his runs compared to mine I can see where I'm losing time.

At first blush it kinda stinks to get beat by your own car, but on the other hand it was very cool seeing someone making my car do what I didn't think it could do. It's also nice to know I don't have to spend any more money on the car till I can find those two seconds behind the wheel.

Fun course at FedEx's big lot, as always. The sealer wasn't nearly as treacherous as it was last time here (35 degree temperature difference probably played a role here). No complaints except for the sunburn.

Thanks man! But I'm actually buying some Civic body parts (hood, fenders, bumper)...so while they are likely going to be clean, they are really big. Don't think it will fit. Thanks for the offer though!

I think I am just going to drive down there this Saturday to pick up the body parts. Unless someone with a truck is going down to Va Beach and lives in NoVA/MD/DC area so I could come pick them up locally.

CDC Autocross at James Wood High School, Winchester, VA
The next CDC autox is at James Wood HS in Winchester, VA on Saturday August 21st. Reservations are open to members and non-members. Sign up at capitaldrivingclub.com under the schedule tab.

This is the last time we will be at James Wood HS for 2010 (with our current schedule), so if you want to check out this site, this is the event to sign up. The lot is large and worth the drive, with each participant getting 6 runs (3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon).

We'll have plenty of hotdogs and sausages, with plenty of free water, gatorade, and sodas.

**** was really screwed up this weekend. On Friday night (Saturday AM?) they had closed the 395 -> 95S ramp. No big deal, except that my exit is right off of that ramp. So they detour you to 495N. Which had 4/5 lanes closed. I had a 10min drive to make, took me about an hour and a half. Top-down in the Miata with mostly Semis around you with the non-semis switching lanes every 20ft is exciting.

I am planning on taking 28 to 17 down through Tapahanock and Yorktown then pick up 64 in Hampton bypassing most of traffic plus a much more enjoyable route. My dad lives in Hampton so I have made this treck many times, beats the hell out of gridlock on 95 and 64.
If it weren't beach season the highways are faster, but this time of year every flat tire or speeding ticket causes rubber-necking delays.

JohnnyZoomNow

17th August 2010, 19:32

At the other TSCC events the two driver cars are usually first off each heat. The grid worker will stop the line in middle for the second drivers to run. I don’t know if this method will be used at the VAC. I hear all cars in the same class will be running in the same heat. That’s not typical for a TSCC event, so the way two driver cars are handled could be different too.

Me and Kate had a great time in Virginia Beach. I got 5th out of 9 in STS which isn't bad since I never got 100% comfortable with how hard I should have been pushing the car on the concrete on Saturday, and when I decided to throw caution to the wind and just go for it on Sunday I coned 3 out of 4 runs.

Overall it was a great event. Only a couple hang-ups - there was some confusion as we left on Saturday over which run groups would be run when on Sunday. I thought the first Saturday run group would run third on Sunday (basically shifting morning to afternoon) but instead they flipped the four heats on an axis. That worked fine for me, since we got the driest course to run on (27/120 in PAX for me!) but I don't know if those who ran first heat on Sunday expected that. It also messed up some workers, like the guy at station 6 with us on Sunday morning who, halfway through the 2nd heat, realized all the cars he drove with the previous day were moving into grid for the 3rd heat and his car wasn't at all ready to go. He should have worked first heat, but got confused.

I think grid was run kinda haphazardly, especially with us two-driver cars. It seemed like as soon as the car came back we had to scramble to change drivers/check pressures/spray tires/change numbers (messed up there once or twice, we're not used to sharing) and then driver #2 was sent out as soon as he/she was belted in. We were mixed in with single-driver cars rather than the typically more orderly WDCR process. At some point it wouldn't have surprised me if we had already done our four runs before some single-driver cars had gone on a third.

Aside from the above minor gripes, it was a great event. Both me and Kate are happy with our results, and we did OK in the raffle as well (got a new CGlock to replace the one that fell apart on me a couple months ago). Do it again on a weekend where there aren't any SCCA/AI/BMW conflicts up this way and we'll definitely be back.

You want confusion? During the day I heard both 1/3, 2/4 swap as well as complete flip so Saturday night I asked and was told that they were not switching heats for Sunday and we would run the same heat as Saturday. Think of my shock on Sunday morning to be told that I am running first heat.

**Warning event operations geek mode on**

Grid - As someone who has driven a two driver car with a bunch of different clubs two drivers was not that bad. In the drivers meeting they told all two driver cars to grid at one end of the grid so you should have been with the other two driver cars. With only ~25 cars per heat (~100 drivers over 4 heats) two driver cars are going to be turning over pretty quick. Assuming cars are released about every 30 seconds with ~25 drivers you have 12.5 minutes to get each set of runs off. Figure 45 seconds back to grid and out of the car and 1:30 from release from grid to the start line and 60 seconds on course (all estimates) that is 3.25 Miniutes per person that you are not in grid or 6.5 for the two of you. Now of that 12.5 minutes per set you have about 6 minutes between the two of you in grid so about 3 minutes per person per run. So yeah it is a pretty quick in and out there. Do it a few more times and you start to work out a system of who does what so that you don't forget the numbers that often.

It was good to meet some of you and put some faces to screen names.

Sorry about the run/work order confusion on Sunday. I know I was a big part of the confusion. The information sheets and details on the web clearly depicted how Sunday was going to be run, but I guess I don't pay attention. I told everybody that we were staying the same on Sunday. Doh!

I ended up getting the wet end of the stick running in the rain during the 2nd heat. I didn't like the fact that it took me out of the running for top pax spot for the weekend, but I am happy that I got the chance to throw on the rain tires and get some practice before Nationals.

I ended up winning DSP and finished 16th overall for the weekend with wet runs on Sunday. I can't be disappointed with that outcome.

Now if I just could have gotten Junior to hit a cone during the Top 16 shootout I would have been really happy. Getting my a$$ handed to me in the final round was tough. I don't mind getting beat, but Junior ran 1.5 seconds faster than his fastest run of the day. What am I supposed to do with that?

I'm sure I'll see you all dodging cones somewhere in the future.

Thanks, I looked up the SSR website after we talked. I liked those wheels a lot but not enough to pay over $500 a wheel for them. I think I’ve located a set of similar looking wheels in the right size and offset for $700. well, i have a hardtop so it doesn't matter for me, but they're not overly strict, but shenandoah is a really technical course and would be easy to roll if you did it wrong.

Thanks, I looked up the SSR website after we talked. I liked those wheels a lot but not enough to pay over $500 a wheel for them. I think I’ve located a set of similar looking wheels in the right size and offset for $700. I would hope the quality of the SSR wheels is much better to justify the price, but regardless they’re too steep for me. I’ve got a lot going on right now but I plan to get the wheels in October.

I have some NC-sized SSRs for cheap if someone wants them. 18x7.5, 42 offset. Probably too skinny and tall for most of you autocrossers, but I'd damned near give them away compared to their new price.

What groups allow you to run with a hardtop but not a rollbar?

I believe the particular track can also play a role in the requirements as well besides the club or group holding the event.

Almost none, and he does have a roll bar. He just meant that nobody checks head clearance under your roll bar when you have a hardtop on the car, at least not at any HPDE I've been to. Broomstick test would require pulling the hardtop, and nobody bothers to make you do that. When trying to get 120+ cars teched for a weekend, there's just not enough time. Of course, for your own safety it's best if you actually are under the bar...

I'm pretty sure I've seen a thread somewhere on this site about a track event that allowed Miatas to run without a bar. I forget which group and which track it was.

When I ran with NASA-SE at NCCAR, they were letting convertibles w/o roll bars on track.
