Don't know really much of anything about Goddard as a director, but I can't say I side with Sony on Watts.

@dagenspear - Goddard had a great vision for a Sinister Six movie, was the original showrunner on Netflix Daredevil was also attached to the X-Force movie, comes from the Whedonverse with shows like Buffy and Angel also teamed with Whedon for his now classic feature debut Cabin in the Woods and also worked Alias and Lost with JJ Abrams.

He's elite.

Jon Watts is like the lowest amount of wattage you can get in a light bulb above someone's head.

@dagenspear - Cabin in the Woods is a fantastic twist on the horror genre. Highly recommended. In fact it was working on that that got Chris Hemsworth the recommendation from Joss Whedon to Marvel to become Thor.

As someone who liked Watt’s MCU Spidey trilogy , I really would rather they get someone new to direct the next one…

NWH closed a chapter in Peter’s life while also opening a new one so bringing in a new story teller (Drew Goddard presumably) to add their style & sensibilities to this version and continue the story forward would be fresh & nice imo!!.

Hopefully it’s street level though 😁

@TheVisionary25 - I'm thinking the same thing. Getting a new director would bring a new perspective, which would keep things fresh. Watts did a fine job, but I think three films under one director is more than enough. Seeing as this is a new chapter in Peter's life, it's very suitable for a new director to tell it.

For those who need context, Goddard worked on several films such as cabin in the woods, world War z, and the Martian. He can be very talented, but he's also very hit and miss.

So really this comes down to the safe bet, watts, or the more risky Goddard.

@Origame - true. Kinda gained a cult following since then. They're always asking for a sequel. It's probably gonna end up happening too.

@Origame - He worked on three of my favorite shows/movies ever - The Martian, Daredevil (Netflix), and The Good Place. I'll roll those dice.

@AliX - yes, but in comparison to Jon watts, who's proven specifically with this franchise?

@ptick - He also wrote and directed "Bad Times at the El Royale". Which is a terrific movie and in my opinion credentials enough to helm something in the MCU.

If Marvel team up with Sony for two more Spider-Man movies, then he most that Sony will get from the IP will be around 4 billion.

So give them 4 billion in cash and exclusive video game contracts and call it a day.

MCU movie without Kevin Feige? No thank you.
Kevin Feige has been merged with the soul of Stan Lee.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Disney needs to offer to exchange some of its IPs for Spiderman. Disney picked up a bunch of IPs that do not fit their family friendly brand. In exchange for Spiderman I would offer, Aliens, Predator, the Fly, the Omen, Hellraiser, and the 28 Days later franchise plus some cash. As Madame Web showcased, Sony can make any film from these franchises on the cheap and make a profit off the horror community. This relationship with Marvel is not serving anyone.

slickrickdesigns -2/20/2024,8:37 AM

@Forthas - yeah but none of those IP’s is as profitable as Spider-Man.

Why does Miles go by spiderman if he is going to exist in the same time and place as Peter? Are they seriously both going to be Spiderman?

Login to report abuse

marvel72 -2/20/2024,8:43 AM

@Ryguy88 - Exactly,Miles should have a different name. Spider-Gwen isn't Spider-Woman. Ben Reily a clone of Peter Parker goes by the name Scarlet Spider.

@Ryguy88 - He's a Robin that couldn't become his own Nightwing.

@HashTagSwagg - more like if Robin was also named Batman

ptick -2/20/2024,1:26 PM

@Ryguy88 - 100% sure there would be a passing of the torch with Peter either dying or retiring.

(Though technically there are currently two Hawkeyes in the MCU.)

It's kind of funny that Miles is pretty much by far the most popular "legacy hero" and he's not going to hit live action until after Falcon Cap, Falcon 2, Kate Bishop, Stature, Yelena, etc.

Th3Batman -2/20/2024,8:41 AM

The biggest issue I have with Miles is how Marvel is constantly presenting him as a "better" Spider-Man than Peter, especially in the latest Ps5 game. What I really love about how Bruce Timm and Paul Dini wrote Terry Mcginnis in Batman Beyond is that he was never presented as a superior Batman. Bruce Wayne was always given the respect his original version would be expected to receive based on all his accomplishments. We were instead given a Batman who made mistakes and had to learn from Bruce, as you'd expect from someone just starting out and working under a veteran hero. Miles Morales on the other hand is slowly but surely, somehow, becoming Peter's mentor. Terry eventually grew to become his own version of Batman that brought his own flavor to the character's legacy, but he NEVER replaced Bruce Wayne, unlike Miles who is doing exactly that to Peter.

FireandBlood -2/20/2024,9:41 AM

@Th3Batman - Not a great example, when Timm and Dini wouldn’t allow not a single character to shine above their Batman.

And Miles isn’t becoming Peter’s mentor, nor is he being shown to be “better” than Peter in any media. In the games, Peter always gets the better showings(and storyline), and in the movies, Peter isn’t the lead character. But we’ve never seen Miles presented as a veteran Spider-Man like we have multiple Peter in the last 3 movies, who’ve even mentored other Peter’s.

@FireandBlood - "Timm and Dini wouldn’t allow not a single character to shine above their Batman."

That's how one of the greatest superheroes should be treated. Bruce Wayne is THE Batman, and outside of maybe Superman, he should always be the one shining above the rest. You'd never see someone like Terry lecturing Bruce about his no kill rule for example, as he shouldn't. Bruce sets the examples and everyone follows them, it should never be the other way around, with maybe the exception of Superman, and Superman alone.
